The Nuts and Bolts

Our providers specialize in both OCD-spectrum and anxiety disorders in all ages, and several focus on treating young children. Our multidisciplinary treatment approach utilizes a combination of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention), traditional CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), MBT (Mindfulness-Based Therapy), and other evidence-based treatment approaches depending on the needs of our clients.

We lean heavily on objective and subjective clinical and cognitive assessments to ensure we understand all aspects of a case and engage in collaborative treatment-planning guided by these assessments, the scientific literature, and our clinical experience.

Since treatment is tailored to the needs of the client, everyone’s journey at CBTeam looks different. We offer a variety of clinical services and the amount or type of care depends on progress in treatment and desires of the client.

In our previous clinical experiences, we noticed how rarely full residential treatment/hospitalization or once per week therapy was the right “dose” of support. CBTeam provides everything in between, including daily treatment within our Intensive Outpatient Program or use of our behavioral coaches to help generalize lessons learned in therapy.

We are also flexible to some degree about remote versus in-person services (we offer both). This decision will be based on logistical considerations, health needs, and clinician availability. There are times we might be firm about only doing in-person or remote work depending on the situation and this is something that would be openly discussed.

We don’t accept insurance directly, but we will ensure that you receive any documentation needed for out-of-network reimbursement, which many of our clients do receive from their insurance company.

Length of treatment can greatly vary from two months to several years depending on symptom response, treatment goals, and patient preferences. While we can’t promise an exact length of treatment, we can instead promise an ongoing discussion of how treatment is working based on patient experiences, clinician observation, and symptom assessment.

Our Guiding Beliefs

You will thrive without excessive avoidance. With CBTeam, you or your child will learn skills for changing mental and physical behaviors that cause emotional suffering. Behavior change is particularly important in therapy for anxiety because insight alone rarely leads to emotional well-being. Your brain is a learning machine that learns best through direct experience. A common response to anxiety is to avoid or play it safe and the brain doesn’t have a chance to practice anything else. Instead of over-relying on avoidance, your therapist at CBTeam will help you rediscover that your brain is also good at bravery, adapting to the moment, tolerating discomfort, growing from life experience, and finding joy and peace.

Emotions are the color of life and serve an important function. It is essential that from the beginning, we stop treating anxiety like a problem. Anxiety, like all emotions, has a function, but clinical anxiety and mood symptoms occur when helpful emotions are louder than they need to be due to the various relationships we form with them.

Suffering is part of the human experience and not something that indicates weakness. CBTeam is the musical montage of the hero’s story; we believe you or your child are strong and inspiring because of the mental health challenges not in spite of them. One out of two people will meet full criteria for a mental health disorder at some point in their life. If you account for sub-clinical conditions and general emotional suffering, everyone struggles emotionally. What’s inspiring to us is the willingness to accept and navigate these challenges and we are honored to have the opportunity to help with this journey. We have seen time and time again how rich life can become with the right mindset, effective emotional regulation strategies, and decisions based on values even despite ongoing emotional suffering.

You have it in you already. If you ever doubt your mental or physical toughness and ability to challenge yourself in treatment, consider how amazing it is that you’ve been living each day with the full time job of an anxiety or mood disorder going on inside you, while concealing it from most of the people around you. At CBTeam, we will teach you how to stop working so hard for your anxiety or mood disorder so you can free up mental and physical energy to work hard at the things you care about and enjoy your life!

Science, heart, openness and collaboration are all we need to overcome. We believe heavily in evidenced-based treatment at CBTeam and often provide training to clinicians in the community to increase dissemination of these strategies. We are guided in our clinical work by science and a lot of our staff have done the actual clinical research! That said, reading a manual full of these techniques doesn’t lead to meaningful results for most people.

Effective treatment, in our opinion, is about teaching these strategies but also leaning on the personal expertise you or your child bring to the room. We find it critical that CBTeam creates a clinical environment full of human connection, compassion, open collaboration between the patient and the clinician, and a willingness to learn from experience in life rather than just relying on the story we tell ourselves in our head.
