Parent Support Group

Parent Support Group

A clinician-led, remote meeting of parents supporting parents with “what works” and “lessons learned”

The SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) Support Group is a community-based, virtual gathering designed to help support caregivers of children dealing with anxiety, OCD, and other related disorders. The group typically consists of parents who are guided by a trained facilitator knowledgeable in the SPACE and CBT for anxiety protocols.

Research has found that six weekly group meetings of parents with anxious children that focuses on emotional support, group problem solving, and education results in a meaningful reduction in parent depressive symptoms, significant improvement in family functioning, and a notable reduction in child/adolescent mental health symptoms.

Parent Support Group

Key Features:

Safe and Supportive Environment: The group provides a non-judgmental space where parents can openly share their experiences, challenges, and successes in supporting their children’s psychological needs.

Group Discussions: The group is dedicated to discussion, where parents can share their personal stories, seek advice, and offer support to one another. This communal sharing helps parents feel less isolated in their journey.

Resource Sharing: Parents might exchange resources such as books, articles, podcasts, and other tools that they have found helpful. The group may also provide education and handouts related to SPACE and CBT treatment.

Practical Ongoing Support: The group typically meets remotely once per week, allowing parents to build relationships, track progress, offer accountability, and receive ongoing encouragement as they implement the SPACE skills without too much of a logistical burden.

Confidentiality: To ensure a trusting environment, confidentiality is emphasized, meaning that anything shared within the group stays within the group.

Structure of the SPACE Support Group:

  • Overall, the SPACE Support Group is a valuable resource for parents wanting to enhance their skills in supporting their child’s psychological well-being while receiving the support they need to implement the strategies. This support group is often recommended after completing the foundational SPACE Skills Group but this is not required.
  • The SPACE Support Group meets remotely 7-8pm on Wednesdays and is billed at $35/meeting.
